Derrell Lester Martin, age 96, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2019 in Seymour. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church in Seymour, with Rev. Ryan Ford, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.
Derrell was born, June 27, 1923, in Westover, Baylor County, Texas, to Joe Franklin and Annie Mae Legate Martin. He married Otekia Bell on July 6, 1943, in Coleman, Texas, and together they farmed and ranched in Baylor County their whole lives. Derrell served his country as a Corporal in B754, and was judged the best trainee in the 64th Training Batallion Infantry Replacement Training Center which was composed of 1200 men. He served as a staff sergeant for his tour of duty at Camp Fannin.
Derrell was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, served on the board of the First United Methodist Church, the Baylor County Tax Appraisal Board, and he and his son Kim were the first recipients of the Rancher/Cattleman Award for Baylor County, given by the FSA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe F. and Annie Martin; by five sisters,
Stella Bishop, Myrtle Barton, Ruby Loe, Jo Farr and Nita Harris, and by his wife,
Otekia, who preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage.
He is survived by one daughter, Teddy Young and husband, Carl, of Graham, Texas, and by one son, Kim Martin, and wife, Colleen, of Seymour, Texas; grandchildren, Chance Fite and wife, Dee Dee, Cayce Pringle and husband, Richard, Allison Young Edwards, Kyle Martin and wife, Rachel, Dr. Kory Martin and wife, Dr. Toni Chu, and Kimbra Dreyer and husband, Steve; and great-grandchildren,
Carson, Cody and Clay Fite, Guy and Grace Edwards, Hayden and Cade Hill, Rhett Hanson, Roan and Raney Pratt, Sam and Nate Dreyer, and Camden and Maggie Martin.
