Norma Lorene Thurman

Norma Lorene Thurman
September 23, 1926 - January 31, 2021

Norma Thurman of Wichita Falls went home to be with her Lord on January 30, 2021 at 94 years of age. She was born on September 23, 1926 in Rome Township, Iowa but spent much of her childhood in Southern California after her parents, Wayne and Reba Wood, relocated there to pursue a living. Some of her favorite memories were formed during this time. At the top of the list, was her time spent enjoying the beach and riding the ferry.
While waiting at a bus stop in downtown San Diego, she met her soon to be husband, a Sailor from Seymour, Texas, stationed at the Naval Training Center nearby. She and Willis Thurman were married on October 9, 1942 for 64 years until he preceded her in death on November 2, 2007.
The early years of marriage were spent in San Diego, but eventually the couple decided to relocate to Seymour, Texas. Norma went to beauty school and worked as a hairdresser in Seymour for many years. Her fondest memories include motorcycle touring with her husband, and a lifetime of family closeness. Those who knew her best, know that she was an adventurous spirit and always ready for a road trip!
She was involved with the American Legion and a member of the Church of Christ where she taught children’s Sunday School. After her husband’s death, she moved to Wichita Falls to be near her daughter. While there, she was an active member of the Wichita Falls Church of Christ and enjoyed volunteering at United Regional Healthcare and Hospice of Wichita Falls. Norma will always be remembered and admired for her giving heart, kind spirit, and fearless pursuit of adventure. Perhaps the only one who will miss her more than her friends and family is her cat, Charlie, whom Norma loved dearly!
Preceding Norma in death are her brother Richard Wood and granddaughter Lisa Thurman. She is survived by her “sister” in law and best friend, Patsy Benge of Seymour, TX; her children: Tanya Medina and husband Efraim of Wichita Falls, Rick Thurman Sr. and wife Beverly of Niederwald, TX.; grandchildren: Tamera May of Orlando,Fl., Teressa Stephenson of Wichita Falls, Alana Medina of Wichita Falls and Rick Thurman Jr. of Niederwald, TX; 5 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Wichita Falls or MD Anderson Cancer Center.
